A Snippet of Style

Wow! It has been ages since my last blog entry. Things have been super busy these past few months. Time has literally flown — can you believe it’s already mid March? The year is almost a quarter over and I’m not sure if I’ve even accomplished anything as yet! (Though, heads up: look up for a lovely face-lift on the site, coming soon within the next month )

Remember back in October when I blogged about tights, leggings, jeggings and pleggings for FW 09/10? Today’s entry revisits this wardrobe staple as it has grown and developed in the past few months. Honestly even I’m shocked (pleasantly of course) at the sheer variety of leggings available out there; indeed, the selection is still growing daily. It’s as if the point of saturation still hasn’t been found (good news for us leggings fanatics!) Ironically enough, with the wide selection available to us, I only just got around to buying my very first pair of basic black leggings about two weeks ago.

This separate is sexy, fun, exciting and unusual.  Plus (and best of all) it gives a wonderful shape to those of us not naturally blessed with gorgeous legs.

In the past we would have paired brightly colored fanciful tops with basic block color leggings: the top was generally the highlight of the outfit. But today, with the wide variety of leggings available, the legging becomes the highlight. So learn to pair basic items with fancy leggings to create unusual and eye-catching outfits Check out some of these amazing separates I found while surfing etsy and asos (two of my favorite shopping destinations).

These sheer tights have a wonderful snake line running up the back. So sexy with a basic black pencil skirt and pumps. Love them!

This fanciful pair of floral leggings remind me of an English tea party (though I wouldn’t wear them to one of course!) Great paired with a black miniskirt or mini-dress. Adds a fun and playful touch to a basic outfit.

Lace tights! Very sexy and very alluring. Wear them with all black or if you’re really daring, pair them with a bright red mini-dress or miniskirt. If you’re not brave enough to wear these on their own (they can look entirely too sexy on some body types), consider layering them over another pair of brightly colored tights — purple, blue, pink or even yellow can look amazing — to tone down the sexiness a bit.

I hope people are not inspired to come read these leggings! Love the comic book illustration leggings. Very, extremely unusual — definitely pair with black or dark grey otherwise you would risk looking too cartoonish.

Yes you’re reading it correctly; those tights are asking “Wanna Party?” down the back. Great paired with black or sequins for a night out! Very unusual and a definite conversation starter

Sequined leggings; wear them with black heels and a simple colored top. In black it lends an edge of sophistication to your outfit.

Scaly animal print leggings. Look wonderful with the black Mary Janes (as in this photo), and paired with a black mini-dress.

I’m really loving these sexy tattoo tights! A peacock feather tattoo running up your leg over sheer tights. Very sexy!

So there you have it, a collection of wonderful tights and leggings. There are so many more out there; this is really just a sampler of some of my favorites. What other sites have you seen unusual leggings and tights on?

It’s no longer simply a necessary garment fastening, but now a fashion accessory as well - the exposed zipper is a must-have style for this fall/winter. The trend’s been around since spring but the zippers are only getting more and more pronounced for the end of the year. What are you waiting for? Get ready to add this chic trend into your wardrobe!

It’s a hot trend for Fall/Winter 2009 and so easy to wear. If you live in the tropics, just throw on a stylish zipper detailed dress, pair with a cute charm necklace and you’re ready to go! Living in colder climes?  Pair your dress with a stylish black blazer and tights. The zipper trend adds a unique edge to an otherwise plain dress. It is so easy to wear and channels chic sophistication at low prices and minimum fuss.

Looking for something slightly more detailed? Try out this tulip cut printed mini dress. The zipper detail adds definition to this clean style. Try pairing with a short sleeved black jacket to add some solid color to break up the patterns. Wear gladiator style heels or peep toe wedges to complete your look. If you’re wearing tights, black boots are perfect for complementing the zip-front dress.

Don’t miss Beyonce’s fab zip ruffled skirt here. Absolutely amazing! I don’t think I could ever carry off this look personally but wow it sure looks hot on her! When we first saw it, we thought it was a one-season wonder, but it has endured and morphed and taken on a fashion life of its one. What am I speaking of, but the now ubiquitous jumpsuit. This fashion trend was big for S/S 2009 and looks set to endure through S/S 2010. The jumpsuit has become a fashion mainstay and every girl should have at least one in her closet!

While a lot of you might feel the jumpsuit is not appropriate for your figure, there are now tons of varieties to choose from. This piece has had quite the fashion makeover from its origins in the 70s and 80s. All you need to do is figure out your look and you’ll be all set to wow.  Read on to find out how to wear this hot fashion trend.

To begin with, a bit of vocab, there are three basic varieties of these one-piece outfits: the jumpsuit (long), the romper (short) and the playsuit (casual short suits). These terms can and are used interchangeably.

Wearing a jumpsuit can be difficult to master, but with some useful tips you’ll be rocking this look in no time. First, choose a style that suits your figure. Go for the middle ground; avoid jumpsuits that are too baggy or too fitted (unless you are a size 0)! Look for tailored or body skimming styles that can be worn for many occasions. When you choose your first jumpsuit, pretend as if you are wearing a top and long pants and look for a style with a forgiving fabric. You’ll immediately realize what looks right on you.

Some general tips:

• Night Time Wear: For evening wear, look for fabrics like silk or satin with detailing like sequins or paneling or even leather. See below for some evening-appropriate jumpsuits.
• Accessorize: If you are wearing a basic block-colored jumpsuit, there are tons of options available for you. Pair with a cropped jacket in a contrasting color or bold jewelry or cinch in your waist with a wide belt. Think of your jumpsuit as a canvas which you will paint with the right accessories to showcase the look you desire.
• Shorter Height: Full-length, wide-legged jumpsuits look best on long legs. If you are of less than average height, do wear high heels to lengthen your silhouette. V-neck or plunging necklines will also give the illusion of lengthening your body.
• Replace Your LBD: Consider wearing a long black jumpsuit (LBJ) instead of a little black dress (LBD). (lol…I think I should patent that term — sheer brilliance on my part! ) If need be you could also add a belt to help break up your look.
• Patterns: Choose solid colored pieces with contrasting patterns if you so prefer. Don’t wear jumpsuits that are patterned head-to-toe.
• Shoes: If you’re tall and you’re wearing a long jumpsuit, pair with flats to maintain attention on your jumpsuit. Shorter length jumpsuits look good with heels which will help to lengthen your legs.
• Fabric: Fabrics like silk will hug your curves far more than denim or cotton. Think of your own body before deciding on the best fabric for you.
• Make Wise Choices: The right jumpsuit for you mostly depends on your body shape. If you have a big bust, avoid bandeau styles and look for V-necked designs. Long jumpsuits look best on curvy bodies, while the romper style suits shorter women best. The jumpsuit style can sometimes be too masculine for slim and boyish figures, so you would need to accessorize well to make up for this.

Wear a black, satin halter jumpsuit for an evening out. This simple black one-piece channels relaxed glamour and is an uber-fashionable alternative to the evening dress. Curvy and pear shaped women can rock the halter jumpsuit to create a hot silhouette. This is an ideal LBJ for a night out! Contrast the heavy black with a bright red clutch for a modern and sophisticated touch.

A tailored jumpsuit is perfect for taking you from work to a night out with friends. Look for jumpsuits in solid colors with contrasting patterns that add sophistication to your look. Pair with matching black heels to elongate your legs in this leggy jumpsuit.

These playful rompers are perfect for summer. Rock this chic look if you have long legs and aren’t afraid of showing them off! Accessorize these block-colored jumpsuits with bright accessories to create a unique and stylish summer look.

Colorful sporty playsuits are a must have for summer. These sleeveless playsuits look great layered over a white shirt. Add some brightly colored retro accessories to channel a modern 70s style fashionista.

I simply love feathers. They bring to mind magical tales of kingdoms lost and won, stories of swan princesses, and dreams of flying and enchantment. Feathers exude grace and style by adding a flight of fancy to your look. This elegant trend is hot for Fall/Winter 2009, so do add some feathery wonder to your outfits!

This look was seen on the runway for the season, and more recently on celebrities like Black Lively who wore the above feathered dress to the New York premiere of Where The Wild Things Are. Also don’t miss this sighting on the streets of Paris. Absolutely amazingly stylish.

For those who are not so daring (this includes me!), it is still easy to add this trend into your wardrobe by accessorizing with a feathered headband or other jewelry. Just in time for fall, here are some of the hottest color trends for FW09/10. Channel these winter colors in a sunny style through our tropical inspired collection. For this season, the runway looks were mostly of simpler design and made of more affordable fabrics. Most designers had lessened the number of items in their collections as well, all in the name of the recession that we are currently facing. Colors have turned more to the dark side (a random Star Wars reference there ). Generally, winter fashions are styled in darker shades, so that is really no surprise. There are however some surprises in bright reds and spring-inspired shades like green. So find which hue suits you best and wear it in style this season!

A classic set of shades for this fall are black and its close cousin, gray. Black especially is a classic favorite that is generally always found in winter collections. Pair black and gray separates with brighter shades like red, green or orange. These classic basics provide lovely neutral canvases for you to create your own personal fashion style by accessorizing well. These elegant monochrome basics are wonderful to offset bright shades. These will always be wardrobe staples so add them to your collection now!

Elegance and sophistication are to be had when wearing these pretty pastel pieces. Shades of cream, beige, pink and orange add some quiet style to your wardrobe. Another classic color for winter is blue in its many varied shades from navy to turquoise to sky blue to aquamarine. Leggings and tights have become an integral component of every fashionista’s wardrobe. These versatile separates match well with dozens of different styles, while flattering most figures if worn correctly. The reason for the continued success of this trend, which has fast become a wardrobe staple, is debated by experts. Some speculate that their success lies in the economic downturn the world is facing at the moment — leggings are cheaper than pants but look as (or more) beautiful!

This trend was seen all over catwalks for fall-winter 2009/10 and will definitely be around to stay for a while. If you’re just sporting basic black leggings, you need (yes, need!) to add tons more options to your wardrobe simply because there are so many to choose from now. I’ve brought together some of the hottest trends and following are some inspirational styles from the runway to feed your imagination.

One key new trend is the jegging. The fine line between jeans and leggings is being blurred as skinny jeans become even skinnier and leggings acquire more substance to produce the jegging. Jeggings are tightly fitted jeans that many times have faux pockets and buttons. They are also sometimes washed and ripped at appropriate places. Wear them with long, belted, slightly loose fitting shirts and cardigans and pair with wedges or ankle boots to get an ultra chic look for any occasion. This trend is easy to wear and pairs with tons of basics you’ll already have in your closet. Give your outfit an unusual edge by pairing with jeggings rather than jeans!

Remember the days when runs in your stockings were a huge fashion no-no? Well these days no more as ripped leggings and tights are a new addition to this trend. I’m not too sure about this one personally but I suppose fashion constantly strives to push at the boundaries of our imagination.

Leggings and tights also come in printed, sequined and embellished designs. Metallic leggings (shall we call them meggings?), as well as leather leggings were also on the catwalk for FW09/10. Lace tights are also in at the moment, and can look awesome worn on their own or layered over another pair of brightly colored tights or leggings.

Whatever your style there is definitely a unique pair of leggings or tights that will suit you. I’m sure there are loads of other styles out there as well that I’ve not mentioned: pants + leggings anyone? It can be called, (and I think is called the ‘plegging’) as well as tons of other styles!

Leggings and tights for FW09/10 are available in a variety of lighter and heavier fabrics some of which are inappropriate to be worn in the tropical regions. We would need to adjust some of these looks to suit the climate. Aim to layer light scarves and sweaters over loose fitting tops. Tunics, blouses and shirts in flowing styles worn over tights or leggings are perfect for a classic style. Contrast patterns and solids in your outfits and leather leggings are probably best avoided.

The fourth and final part of this series on dressing for your body type. This entry focuses on the rectangular or athletic shape.

The rectangular shape has the following characteristics:

• Very little curve
• Slim / athletic / narrow / small frame
• Great legs and arms
• Small chest size
• Linear appearance (straight up and down)
• Weight gain evenly deposited over whole body

To dress the rectangular shape, the goal is to create curves and an hourglass shape. The focus is on creating a more obvious waistline. Try to “break up” your silhouette by interrupting clothing lines to create a natural waist. If you are slender, use this to your advantage and show off your lean shape by wearing fitted clothes. Avoid vertical stripes because they will hide your curves. Instead wear busy patterns and florals that add dimension and femininity to your figure. In general, athletic shapes look great in most of today’s fashions and also our collection items. Some famous celebrities with this body type include: Cameron Diaz, Nicole Kidman, Hilary Duff and Sheryl Crowe.

Tops / Blouses / Shirts

• Wear halter tops to highlight curves in your figure
• Wear pleated and gathered shirts (especially at sleeves and waist)
• Wear tops with necklines that come below the collarbone to elongate your neck and upper body
• Wear tops that cinch at the waist to define your figure
• Wear tops with ruffles, lace, neck ties, etc to make your waist look smaller and make you look more feminine
• Wear long suit jackets to lengthen your upper body
• Wear shirts with pockets on the bust to emphasize and highlight curves
• Wear layered tops to add dimension to your body
• Wear feminine tops with lots of ruffles
• Wear tops with prints and/or intricate detailing to draw attention to your upper body
• Wear wrap tops to create the illusion of a waist.
• Avoid baggy tops (unless wearing with a belt or some other detailing) — it may seem like the easiest solution but it will not create visual interest!

The hourglass shape is the one that we aim to recreate for the other body types. So consider yourself blessed if you have an hourglass figure — embrace your curves and flaunt them!

The characteristics of this type include:

• Hips and shoulders are of similar width
• Well defined waist
• Big bust, small waist, big hips and generous thighs
• Weight gain is distributed over body

There are plenty of options to dress the hourglass figure. The main aim is to emphasize your curves and especially your waist. Don’t hide any part of your body but aim to show it off. Throughout history this has been the most admired body type, but these days hourglass women can be self conscious of their curves. But there is no need to hide those curves — instead, you should show them off, ladies! This is the ideal of feminine beauty so women should be proud to have this shape. Some famous hourglasses include Nigella Lawson, Salma Hayek, Charlotte Church, Jessica Simpson and of course, Marilyn Monroe.

General Tips

• Wear fitted clothes to showcase your curves
• Wear soft, clingy fabrics to highlight your figure
• Wear low to medium necklines
• Wear clothes that define the hourglass silhouette
• Avoid stiff fabrics and baggy styles
• Avoid high necklines (unless you have a relatively small bust)
• Avoid very tapered pants
• Avoid clothes with frills, flounces and bows because decorations add volume and hourglass figures don’t need this

Tops / Blouses / Shirts

• Wear fitted single and double-breasted jackets
• Wear deep v-necks, tuxedo and shawl collar necklines
• Wear v-neck or scooped necklines with mid length necklaces
• Wear wrap blouses to emphasize your naturally small waist
• Wear 3/4 sleeves and puff sleeves to add proportion to the bust and torso, as well as flattering big arms
• Wear color-blocked outfits to highlight your curves, such as wearing a dark bottom with a lighter top and a belt that matches the bottom
• Wear tops that are cropped or end at the waist
• Avoid batwing sleeves
• Avoid loose fitting tops as they will hide your outstanding curves

The second part of dressing for your body type focuses on the apple-shaped figure. How do you know if you are an apple? These are the characteristics:

• Wide torso (full bust / waist / upper back / broad shoulders)
• Tendency to gain weight around mid section (stomach / abdomen)
• Top-heavy appearance (bust and midriff are bigger then hips)
• Relatively slim legs / arms / hips

In some ways, the apple-shape can be said to be the opposite of the pear-shape. Btw, don’t you just love how the body types are named as fruits? So cute and appropriate as well! Some famous celebs who are apple shapes include Elizabeth Hurley, Catherine Zeta Jones, Angelina Jolie and Tyra Banks.

The apple-shape is said to be one of the most difficult to dress because most clothes are designed with defined waists (not usually a good choice for an apple!) But a little bit of effort is all that is needed to get you looking slim and sleek; I mean don’t all the above celebrities always look amazing?

The main aim once again is to play up your advantages and play down your disadvantages. To that end the goal every time you make a dressing choice should be to create a proportionate silhouette by slimming down your upper half (chest and waist) into proportion with your lower half. Generally, one colored outfits are ideal for apple-shapes to create an illusion of length to draw focus away from your width. You can also aim to play up your ample bust-line while camouflaging your waistline. Not being an apple myself, this has been a rather interesting article to write because most of the advice here is exactly the opposite of what I would choose for myself! But of course it is perfect for some of you.

Tops / Blouses / Shirts

• Wear v-necks and empire-waisted tops to draw attention to your cleavage and play down your wide waist. A low cut neckline will emphasize your bust (if that’s what you want!) and draw attention upwards to your face
• Wear tunic-style tops that reach the top of the hips. Worn with tapered pants they will highlight your slim legs
• In general, your tops should reach below the waist line to create a slim waist
• Wear single-breasted coats and jackets. Avoid double-breasted styles as they will make you look bigger
• Wear baggy sweaters or cardigans as they can make it seem like you are disguising a slim waist; but be sure to use a belt or a style with darts to make it more “fitted”
• Wear dark solid colors on your upper body to make you look leaner
• Wear vests over sleeveless tanks to call attention to arms and camouflage your stomach
• Wear a belt over the hips of a loose fitting shirt to create a nice smooth silhouette
• Avoid pocketed tops as they can be unflattering and attract too much attention to your upper body
• Avoid baggy tops and tops with puffy sleeves (they will add weight to your upper half)

• Wear v-necks and plunging necklines if you have a full bust - they will make your body seem less rounded
• Avoid halter, off-shoulder and boat neck styles as they will accentuate wide shoulders
• Avoid puffy sleeves
• A lot of the same rules apply here as above for tops and shirts

First up, we have the most common women’s body type — the pear shape. Not sure if this is your body type? Check out the below characteristics:

• Small upper body (narrow shoulders / small bust / slender neck)
• Large lower body (shapely waist / full or wide hips and thighs)

Did you know that celebrities with this body type include Beyonce Knowles, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez and Kate Winslet?

The trick to dressing for the pear body shape (as with others, of course) is to play up advantageous features while playing down disadvantageous characteristics. To that end, pear shapes should work to emphasize their slim necks, shapely shoulders and defined waists. Create a sense of balance and comfortable style by making peace with your heavier bottom half! Long unbroken lines help to balance the top and bottom parts of your body. I’m also a pear-shape which is why I headed to write this entry first. A lot of my dressing choices are purely instinctive but they work well for me, so here I am sharing it with all of you.

Tops / Blouses / Shirts

• Choose tops that draw attention to your shoulders, especially with wide necklines (boat-neck or scoop-neck) to widen your shoulders and create a sense of balance with your bottom half.
• Define your waist with belted or cinched styles to show off your shapely waist. Wear tops that draw attention to your face
• Wear shirts that draw attention to your face, especially with buttons or ties at your neck to draw eyes upwards
• Avoid too-tight shirts
• Avoid too-baggy shirts, especially if you are plus sized; this will just make you look bigger all over
• Layer garments to create visual balance between your top and bottom half.
• Top off shirts with a blazer to balance out shoulders in proportion to hips. Best length for a blazer is one that hits at waist level or above.

• Plain bottoms will help to emphasize your top half better and draw attention away from your bottom half
• Wide-leg/flared/boot-cut pants and jeans are best. As a “rule”, the curvier you are, the longer and wider you should wear your pants with higher heels to balance.
