the yummiest blogs

It has been ages since my last update, I know! I’ve got some great updates planned though over the next few weeks, exploring current summer trends and also some sneak previews on our upcoming site updates. We’re well into summer already and it’s time to kick back, relax and enjoy the long wonderful days ahead :)

This time of year always brings back tons of nostalgic memories…of long summer holidays (three months!). The wonderful, lazy days of whiling away countless hours playing games and eating and reading non-stop. Ahh, the blissful days of youth ;) Of course this time of year always makes me feel even more nostalgic especially because my birthday is very much in the summer; a year older and wiser am I now — the quarter of a century has hit!

It’s always around this time of year when I start to re-assess my life and try to set new goals for the coming year (something that creates a lot of happy motivation energy). So, recently I’ve been pursuing two of my favorite passions — food and fashion. As part of that I’ve been surfing loads of blogs to inspire myself (sometimes you just need to waste time doing things you enjoy so you can get back on track)! What better to update with then to present you with a list of ten (or so) of my most favorite food blogs. (Psst, I’ve also been baking a lot recently so will post up some recipes as well soon).

Btw, so what are some of your favorite food blogs? Let us know below!

Of course the ultimate guide out there on the food-o-sphere. Tastespotting. I think this site really needs no introduction. It’s visual food porn at its very best. I love this site. It makes me really hungry. Starving, in fact. But I love it anyway :)

A site dedicated to seeking sweetness in everyday life. What a philosophy! A great site for finding out interesting new dessert ideas, as well as wonderful recipes all presented in the cutest style. Features recipes like Rice Krispie Pizza, Twinkie Tiramisu, Samoa Cupcakes (these simply look WOW), Houdini Bars, Nanaimo Bars (a delicious treat which I tried on a ferry to Victoria two years ago but still have not had the opportunity to re-create) among many, many more. A great (and fun) resource for bakers!

While not strictly a food blog, this lovely blog combines both of my loves: food and fashion in an unbelievably stylish manner; the tagline is “Killer clothes and Fine cuisine”. I love love love the photos. Amazing. Check out some of my favorite eye candy posts (especially those pie pops; a must try out!)

One of my all-time favorite blogs; in fact it is one of the first I ever discovered. Her cake pops are an absolute classic! She inspired me to purchase a wonderful little cupcake recipe book entitled Hello Cupcake though I’ve yet to make anything from it. Amazing blogger who creates wonderful desserts in a fun and imaginative manner with a minimum of fuss. P.S. her oreo truffles are always always always a big hit and SO easy to make! I’ve also got my eye on trying out this awesome fast food meal, as well as these fun film bake treats. And oh, of course, these brownie pillow cookies.

Smitten Kitchen

I enjoy reading the posts on this site because they are so wonderfully written and I simply adore all the visual eye candy as well. I’ve bookmarked a ton of recipes but have yet to try them out. This site is extremely useful and a great resource for novice cooks (such as myself). Some of my loves: hello dolly bars, homemade oreos, lemon layer cake, and icebox cake (which I’d really never heard of before reading about it on this blog! Looks so easy and yet so delicious).

Bake or Break

This site features a lot of amazingly simple recipes. Plus, I love the printable recipes we get on this blog. Have tried out a couple of recipes and instructions are always really clear and easy to follow (very exact and hardly had to adjust anything!) Plus we get multiple desserts rolled into one delicious whole, like the chocolate chip cookie dough cheesecake bars, the brownie peanut butter cups, chocolate-chip filled melting moments and double delicious cookie bars! The recipe names evoke a tantalizing expectation of delicious flavor ;)

Cupcake Bakeshop

A great resource for cupcake lovers with many basic tips on troubleshooting your cupcake baking problems. Extremely helpful; have browsed through and perused the tips section but have yet to try out any recipes. There’s just too much variety to choose from!

I love the name of this blog. It’s just so simple and straightforward! An amazing resource for Singaporean foodies. This is another one of the first food blogs I ever read, and I keep returning back to it, simply because I haven’t yet found any other site that’s as complete or well organized to discover Singapore foods. I’ve tried out loads of places due to his recommendations, like the delicious Godzilla bao (a giant bao that can be eaten as a full meal unto itself).

Joy the Baker

A yummy food blog indeed. I return back to this site randomly when in the mood for some delicious photos and recipes to make. I’ve tried out the lemon whoopie pies from this blog and oh-my-god they are to-die-for! ;) Check out this list of her top ten favorite cookie recipes.

Dessert First

Another blog that I randomly get drawn back to. I love some of the novel ideas on this blog, like the sweet sushi and also classics like this chocolate capri cake.

The Pioneer Woman

I love her. She’s amazing. She writes really well and I love her step-by-step photo instructions! Her whole site is bloody amazing; she’s so over-achieving I almost hate her (no kidding, I still love her). Am waiting to try out her chocolate sheet cake which has rave reviews all over the blog-o-sphere and looks simply to-die-for. And also this stuffed french toast and tons of her other recipes as well. Oh and I love her story. Her love story that is. Wonder if it is true?? Sounds so movie-like. *sighs*

Simply Recipes

The name says it all; this site is a classic. And really a go-to place for great and simple no-fail recipes. One of my first food blog loves and regularly visited by me.

dress up your macbook: a list of great decals!

I’m really deeply in love with my Macbook Pro, and ever since I bought it a month ago I’ve been playing with it and tweaking its look. ;) So I bought this really awesome decal online (a Snow White one) and am now eagerly awaiting its arrival!

I’ve also been adjusting the icons on my laptop with some awesome icon sets; apparently it’s simply a matter of cutting-and-pasting to replace folder icons. I’ve got this rather cool armchair with Apple pillow as my Macintosh HD icon. I’m still not too sure how to adjust dock icons manually, but I’ll hopefully figure it out soon. I also love that the size of the icons in Snow Leopard can be adjusted up to 512px! Seriously!! Though I do rather doubt I would ever go that extreme on the size; I keep it at 128×128.

Plus I’ve been downloading loads of freeware (like widgets / NeoOffice / VLC Player / Adium); do check out this site for a great listing of open source software - I do wonder how good the Photoshop alternative Gimp is? Might try it out soon. And of course, there is this old but still relevant post with an interesting list of cool things you can do on your Mac (that you might not know about). Do also visit this great site - it’s one of my favorites to download wallpapers.

Some interesting sites to check out up there (I might have gotten a bit carried away), but before I get even more technical/geeky, I’ll stop and get back to my point: the really awesome macbook decals I never knew were available out there. Check them out!

This isn’t strictly a Macbook decal, but it’s oh-so-cute, don’t you think? Love is Vinyl decal ($17.99) @ coolandkawaii

That’s it for my list. I’m sure there’s tons more out there as well that I’ve not mentioned, but these are some of my personal favorites, though I went with that Snow White one in the end! Did you know that President Obama also has a decal on his Macbook Pro? Yes, he really does — a Pacman one! You can buy it here and see his laptop here!

geek style: super mario

I love Super Mario. And I love etsy.

Putting the two together and adding a mushroom falling out of a brick produces a wonderfully unique selection of gifts and accessories that appeal in a heartfelt way to my fashionable inner geek-ette. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Super Mario has always had a special place in my heart as my favorite video game as a child. I remember many happy days whiled away playing Mario with my sister (though she always forced me to play as Luigi. Ah…the angst of being the younger one :( ). Nowadays I’m more likely to be playing Mario Kart (yes, I’ll never grow up!) on the Wii, as Baby Peach on the Nanobike! Though I do always try to get in a game of the original Super Mario while traveling (some airlines have it available as part of their inflight entertainment). The mushroom kingdom maintains a special position in my heart ’til today ;) .

So, to continue my story, the other day my sister and I were surfing around on etsy. (I imagine all of you as seasoned online shoppers would already know of etsy already, but for those who don’t (horror!), etsy is a marketplace to buy and sell handmade items). And she came across these amazingly geeky Super Mario and Luigi mismatched earrings. After some inspired and happy surfing time, I found a gold mine of Super Mario accessories and gift items. I’m in love with them!

Check them out (and do visit the shops):

The aforementioned Mario and Luigi mismatched earrings. Only $6 @ honeypopjewellery.

A set of six coasters featuring Mario blocks. Only $15 @ Pixelbrush.

Uniquely customized Mario gamer sneakers — really one of a kind! Only $110 @ ParadoxArtistry.

Super-size your style with this Mario mushroom bracelet. Only $14 @ Livethislife777.

This unique necklace features a mushroom popping out of a brick. Only $25 @ Paxalon.

Would you rock these Mario clips? I so would! Only $7.99 @ PlasticParadox.

This unusual decal features Yoshi eating the Apple on your Macbook! Only $12.99 @ lildecalshoppe.

So what are you waiting for? Buy yourself an early Christmas gift, or surprise your geeky friend with your thoughtfulness.

Btw, I also come across some other interesting Mario facts while writing this post. Did you know that the reason Mario wears his iconic hat is because the original creators of the game didn’t want to manage the difficulty of animating hair? Or that Mario was originally given the rather unimaginative name of Jumpman? Check out some of the wiki history here and here, as well as some interesting facts here. Oooh and apparently you can play Super Mario Online here. As for me, I think I’ll just stick to playing Mario Kart for now, and maybe get myself those awesome Mario clips ;) .

19 signs that you are a Photoshop (or design) addict

Taken from here and there. Some are original as well. :) Enjoy the list!!

  1. You have a specific workspace (or spaces) that you have developed and labeled in Photoshop. For ease of use you know.
  2. You recognize the difference between Tahoma and Arial with a glance.
  3. You download brushes, plugins and filters in your free time.
  4. You look for Photoshop tutorials when you can’t find any good brushes, plugins or filters.
  5. You see the world in its True Colors: just like Cyndi Lauper, but with a twist — RGB or CMYK depending on if you are in a digital or print mood.
  6. You know off the top of your head that A4 is 2480 x 3408 pixels.
  7. Magic wand? Pssh. You know how to use the pen tool to far better effect than that old beginner’s tool!
  8. You get annoyed when using Photoshop on computers other than your own because you just can’t remember how you configured yours to such optimum usage. Totally cramps your style.
  9. You just have to open up each of your 1000s of photos in Photoshop in order to adjust that tiniest bit of brightness/contrast.
  10. When you take a photo on your digicam, you immediately scan it to see what might need to be removed or added.
  11. You constantly look in the mirror and wish you could use your mouse to remove that pesky pimple on your forehead. A bit of work to widen your eyes as well. And maybe remove that double chin. Add some gloss and highlights to your hair since you’re at it already, and slim down the abs. Perfect.
  12. You look in the mirror sometimes and wonder how you became so ugly when you look so hot in your Facebook profile picture.
  13. You have been accused of partaking in Photoshop plastic surgery when you met your online boyfriend for the first time.
  14. You wish you could just delete that one layer out of your life. It would make things just perfect.
  15. You recognize (and name) the fonts you see in magazines and newspapers.
  16. You wish you could use the Blur tool to fuzz out the edges of some memories.
  17. You feel irritated when you see badly aligned poster and flyer design.
  18. You constantly wish for ctrl+z when you screw up at work or school.
  19. You try to match hex code colors when you see a pretty color. It would look really great in your next design after all.
